Inka Dinka

The disappearance of the Architeuthis exhibit is curator Billy Harrow’s initiation into an underworld of doomsday cults and supernatural crime lords. Along his descent he is recruited by the Fundamentalist and Sect-Related Crime Unit, aided by a Kraken worshipper, and stalked by an unholy pair of killers. Everyone wants the Kraken and they think Billy can lead them to it. Billy is a preserver not a prophet, yet he must find the giant squid before it is used to usher in the end of the world.

Kraken was my initiation into China Miéville’s cryptic writing. I’m not well-versed in Miéville’s brand of “weird fiction,” but Kraken struck me as a hybrid of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Neverwhere. Miéville’s writing is certainly clever, if not entirely accessible. A fine specimen of the magical properties of ink.
