About J.A. Clemens

author_photo1.jpgJoshua A. Clemens (who would prefer not to refer to himself in the third person) was born in 1977 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I grew up in Utah and live there still. My parents instilled in me a boundless love of books, and that has been a driving force in my life.

I’m a book buyer, book reader, and a book writer, too! I buy books personally as well as professionally for the University of Utah Campus Store, which is a pretty sweet deal. Check out Bookmark at the U for more info about our store. Like any reader worth his dust jacket I have a considerable backlog of books to read, and it continues to grow beautifully. My book Orlando and Geoffrey is available at barnesandnoble.com among other sites. I am working on a sequel, Orlando Imperiled, as well as a science fiction novel entitled Grandpa Art.

575I graduated cum laude from the University of Utah with degrees in History and Russian. Before transferring to the U of U I attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where I played football for the Polar Bears and held General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain’s Congressional Medal of Honor.

0102091208My favorite authors include Mikhail Bulgakov, Michael Chabon, C.S. Lewis, Brandon Sanderson, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Leon Uris. I am an obsessive U2 fan, as is apparent from my Satellite essays. I’m a New Hope kid, but my favorite film is Empire Strikes Back. I follow the Tennessee Titans, the Michigan Wolverines, and, above all, the Utah Utes, who defeated Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl to finish a perfect season! Go Utes! Visit my new ProUtes blog!

  1. I hope you remember me…if not, it’s J-Town! I came across your site and I wanted to tell you…I started writing my novel. Hope all is well and keep in touch if you can!!

  2. With a name like Clemens, of course you are a book lover. . . Thanks for the review of my book, Stalking Irish Madness. I don’t know you, but found you today on a Google search. The book was voted to the Indie Next list of the Indiebound.org group for September, so Stalking is off to the races.
By the way, we seem to share an interest in things Irish and Russian. And don’t those two peoples share a love of literature too. Thanks again! – Patrick Tracey

  3. Joshua,

I was searching for a good review on Outliers, and having read the ones from The Telegraph, The New York Times and even New Scientist; yours had the most insight, and it was the essence of the book in under a web page ; )

    Great blog!

  5. Dear Joshua,
Thank you for your insightful review of Tim Powers’ “The Stress of Her Regard”. Tachyon Publications is publishing a new collection of Powers’ short stories, including a sort-of “post scrip” to Stress, a sumptuous little novella called “A Time to Cast Away Stones”. I’d love to send to you a review copy. Please let me know if you’re interested.
